Existence

One of the most important features that distinguish human from animal existence is our ability to differentiate hedonic pleasures from genuine happiness.

Why is only "animal" accompanied with "existence"?

So even though there is a preposition between two things ("man" and "animal"), is such avoidance of repetition possible?

This is perfectly okay. Instead of saying "....distinguish human existence from animal existence is...", this is shortened into "...distinguish human from animal existence is..."
