Exhibited vs showed

In 2011, according to General Department of Taxation, 1,267 foreign invested enterprises were suspected of transfer pricing and inspected. As as September 2011, 585 stating losses were checked, and 76 exhibited signs of transfer pricing.

I'd like to ask about the use of the verb "exhibited" above.
Is it used appropriately?
My teacher said that it is better to use the verb "showed".
I think it is not completely correct. Could you share your opinion?

Of the two verbs, I think that exhibited sounds more official here. Your teacher isn't entirely wrong.
