Exerting a power

Is this sentence correct?: "they exerted a powerful in local politics".

Shouldn't it be: "they exerted a power in local politics"

I've given you a like there but, technically, if it's a sentence, the first letter should be a capital 'T'

(And, I know, for messages, I tend to omit the full stop if there's a blank line beneath, so I'm not perfect)
