Exercise

Hi, Does "Exercise" here mean "To cause" ?

The jarring contradiction leads to a question: Why does Mormonism exercise such a powerful influence on the lives of Mormons? How can a religion that runs against the grain of modern secularism evoke such strongloyalties? This book tries to answer this question.

I think that exercise means "provoke". I must mention my friend that the topic of the book seems very interesting although I don't see why religion shouldn't exercise such loyalty!

"exercise" here means "use their rights and power". Mormonism has certain rights and power and they use those rights and power to influence people's lives.

It has nothing to do with Mormonism. It's clear from the context what is meant by "exercise". If you're interested in learning more about Mormonism , why not just google for it.
