Exempt or exempted

Hello,

I'd like to know which one of the following sentences is correct? Or, both of them are OK? What's the difference between 'exempt' and 'exempted'?

1. Any man above 35 is exempt from military service.

2. Any man above 35 is exempted from military service.

Thanks.

Hi,

I see very little difference.

Possibly #2 makes the reader think a tiny bit more about who exempted these men, ie who performed the action of exempting.

Welcome back, Yoong Liat.

Clive

PS - I would say #1 is more common.

Actually, like Clive, I am in favour of sentence 1. However, somehow I typed '2' instead. It was 3am when I typed that, so I must have been sleepy.

1. Any man above 35 is exempt from military service
