Exemplar vs Example

i was just wondering whether these terms were totally synonymous, since i often see "exemplar" where I would have put "example?"

"[/nq] They are similar, but not synonymous; I would say that an exemplar is specifically a good example, to be imitated (whereas an example can be of anything ). An exemplar is often, and typically, a person, such as "Sir Galahad was an exemplar of virtue". I'm now thinking of the word "avatar".
