Exclamation mark

Hello,

Is it okay to use exclamation marks in this manner:

"Yes!" he said.

Normally, we can't use it after a period. "Yes." he said is wrong.

But are commas and exclamations marks fine?

"Yes," he said.
"Yes!" he said.

Looking for some ideas.

Thank you, MM. How about this example:

"He said one word only: die!" Mary explained to her friends.

In this case, I take it only an exclamation mark would be right. A comma can't come after colon, nor a period.
