Exchange Hugs

If two person hug, then how should I write about it?

"They exchanged a hug."
"They exchanged hugs."

That's safe, but I rather like 'exchange'. In that case, I think both singular and plural will pass unnoticed.

But if I want to use the "exchange something" pattern, should that "something" be singular or plural?

I would use the plural. Each person received a hug.
- A hugged B and B hugged A.
They exchanged hugs.
