Excessive/redundant/superfluous

Hello.

excessive/redundant/superfluous

Yes, these words are synonyms. But do they have any (subtle) difference in their meanings? If they do, tell me please what is the difference.

P.S. Can you recommend me some good books that explain the differences between synonyms and the situations when one or the other fits better?

Excessive = too much Redundant = duplicated Superfluous = unnecessary Many of the big dictionaries include usage sections under certain words commenting on groups of synonyms that are often confused. Webster has a good dictionary of synonyms, but it is out of print. Others probably exist.
