except vs except for

Could you give me some examples of how to use these two?

In which case are they interchangable and in which case not?

Some examples of (US) usage:

Except for John, everyone who was expected came. (Except cannot be used here. At the beginning of a sentence only except for can be used.)

Everyone came except/except for John. (When not at the beginning of a sentence they are interchangeable.)

Other examples:

He can't do anything except sleep all day. (Except for cannot be used here.)

He can't do anything except/except for sleeping all day. (Here they are interchangeable.)
