Except that

Hello, Members and Gurus!!

He was a runt, and I would protect him from certain seniors, who might have preyed upon Miles, except that I was tall for my age and had the Tartar cheeks of Rembrandt's Polish Rider.

The above "except that" means "only that"?
That is used only to add something, not to contradict what is previously mentioned?
