Except

Are these sentences correct:

1-He never smokes except when listening to Mozart.
2-He never smokes except listening to Mozart.

3-I never see you except when driving to work.
4-I never see you except driving to work.

I think in "3" I am the one driving to work, but "4" is ambiguous. In "4" it is more likely that "you" are driving to work.
