# I cannot interpret these two sentences. Could you please paraphrase them in plain English?
1. There is nothing to indicate the building's past, except (for) the fireplace.
2. I ought to have told the police, except they’d never have believed me.

# How is 'except (that)' in below two sentences different from 'unless' or 'if - not' structure?
3. We'd go, except (that) it's too far.
