Except

Hello Teachers,

I have to join two sentences using the word "except'.

1.Everybody knew the news.

2.John did not know the news.

Now these two can be joined as

3.Everybody, except John, knew the news.

4.Everybody knew the news except John.

Is there any rule for this. Is comma in (1) is mandatory?

Thanks.
