exceeded the expectation?

About ten thousand people took part in the protest march.
About ten thousand people participated in the protest march.
About ten thousand people attended the protest march.

Which one is more common?

And in this context, can I say that:
The participation has well exceeded the expectation of the organizers. (I mean more people have participated in the protest march than the organizers expected; but I am not satisfied with this sentence. Will anyone please add something to it?) Thanks in advance.
