Excavations during the war.
I would just like to check if this paragraph about someone's historical work is okay:
Their European assignments had been restricted by the Axis campaigns, and their Asian ones by the Sino-Japanese and Chinese Civil Wars. They had only been able to look at the ruins that were on the North African and Barbary coastlines when the Afrika Korps had been facing two fronts, and it was not until the end of the war that the Australian and American forces had used their geological interpretations of the Bornean highlands to good effect.

Is there some reason that you are using Past Perfect?

- Is there some reason that you are using Past Perfect?
- I don't see any need for it.
- Without any more context, this would all read better if you simply used Simple Past tense.
