As an American, I would use "he got an excellent grade on the annual exam."

Hi,

He got an excellent grade in the annual exam.

I think you'd more commonly say something like 'the year-end exam'.

Best wishes, Clive

I think "in the end of year exam" may be more common in BrE. Though who knows.

("Annual exam" does suggest an exam that recurs year after year, with exactly the same questions.)

I would normally hear 'on the exam', not 'in the exam.'
