exact meaning of lest

Some people have different understandings of lest below.


Some people argue that the meaning is "he was unhappy because he was tempted into ..." (he did do what he knew...)

Other people say "he was unhappy because he feared to be tempted into ...." (he didn't do what he knew... )

Still other people propose different interpretations. "he was unhappy because his religious creed forbade him from doing what he knew ... God but he want to."

lest = in the case that, for fear that (something bad will happen)
"Lest" is old-fashioned. We don't use it much anymore.

The verb in the following clause is in the subjunctive mood.
Example:
Don't put your hand in the fire lest it get burned.
Don't let you child play in the street lest they get hurt.

It gets burned / they get hurt = a bad thing to happen.
