Evolution of english.

I'm doing a research project about english slang and its evolution through time.
I was wondering what do you think about it.
Do you think slang is necessary for a language to prosper?
Or there shouldn't be much usage of slang because it harms the language?

I mean that slang makes language evolve wrongly, maybe too informal.

I think you need to be careful when you introduce subjective issues like right vs wrong in the evolution of language.

How informal is 'too informal'? A word like 'please', for example, was once considered informal.
