00We all have heard about environmental problems, but in most cases we think these issues are beyond our control or don’t really concern our daily lives and we just assume that we cannot do anything to stop or prevent them.00 00But the truth is that, if nothing is done to control all the damage which is being caused to the environment, in the near future, we will not even be able to think about these problems because we will not exist any more. Thus, we could say that protecting the environment is one of the most serious problems the earth faces in the 2101sup00st02sup00 Century, requiring urgent action and although many groups and associations have tried to protect our planet, the fact is that pollution keeps on affecting critically many parts of the world, especially industrialised countries. 02br

00The main reasons for the deterioration of the environment are the urban sprawl and the industrial development. In the last 300 years, the progress carried out by humans as a result of the Industrial Revolution has been amazing. Nowadays machines and electronic devices are capable to do all kinds of tasks from transport to cooking, not to mention the recent launching of new technologies and the Internet. 00However00, in developing this advances, humanity has exploited nature so much so that most of natural resources are now exhausted and the00 00terrestrial atmosphere is full of toxic gases mostly emitted by industries and transport.02br

00 00Let's analise now some of the more significant problems that the world is facing in this new century. Urban sprawl00 00has destroyed in its path most of green areas, rivers, wildlife, to sum up, entire ecosystems, but the effects caused to the environment by pollution are ever worse. Pure water is a renewable source, however, 00It can become so polluted from human activities that it's no longer useful but 00harmful. Water pollution is putting at00 00severe risk aquatic ecosystems as well as wild species and even human beings who drink that water. Soil is polluted everyday with fertilisers and pesticides, and seriously affected by uncontrolled rubbish dumps and indiscriminate felling of trees. On the other hand, most cities suffer air pollution. London is a case in point, air is affected and modified in its composition by pollutants00 00that do not form part of the usual atmosphere elements, such as carbon monoxide or sulphur dioxide, coming from industries, fires and vehicles and resulting in toxic threats00 00for animals, plants and people.02br

00The greenhouse effect is perhaps the worst consequence derived from air pollution, it is produced by the excess of corbon dioxide which lead to a rise in the planet's temperature which is known as global warming. The consequences of global warming can already be observed in the melting of the poles which results in sea-level rise and can end up flooding coastal areas. Once again science fiction is nothing but a prelude to what actually will happen. Acid rain is another consequence of the abuse of the environment. It corrodes metals, erodes buildings and stone monuments, It damages and kills vegetation and00 00acidifies lakes, streams, rivers and soils, especially00 00in Northeastern United States and Northern Europe and in the last years, also00 00in Southeastern United Status and the central zone of North Africa. Acid rain can also delay forest growth and is responsable00 00for the deterioration of many historical monuments. A case in point is the00 most famous surviving building of ancient Greece00, the Parthenon.00 02br

00 00And last but not least I have to mention the depletion of the ozone layer. Ozone is a gas that we can find in the atmosphere and protects00 00earth from ultraviolet rays, therefore it is absolutely necessary for life to take place. Ozone layer is being altered in the last years by the growing use of00 00CFCs (chlorofluorocarbon) that are used in refrigeration, air conditioners and aerosols. Researches done in the 1980s have revealed the existence of a big hole in the ozone layer over the Antarctica. the depletion of the ozone layer expose terrestrial life to an excees of ultraviolet radiation that can cause skin cancer and cataracts, reduce the responses of the immune system and interfere the photosynthesis of plants.02br

00Once expounded the main problems concerning the environment in the contemporary world, I would like to mention some of the solutions that have been suggested to combat these problems. In the last years, governments and environmental friendly associations as well as some well-known scientists search for alternatives to limit the human impact on the environment. The signings of international agreements have contributed to the protection of nature, pollution has been reduced with several means, such as the ban on the use of pollutant products or the put into practice of00 00clean tecnologies00 00such as sewage treatment plants. The use of renewable energies or the recycling of urban and industrial products have also been really effective against pollution. 02br

00Nevertheless, the only method for the conservation of our planet, is to achieve that humans exploit natural resources without damaging the environment, but, are human beings able to renounce most of the progress achieved in the last centuries in order to keep this planet alive? Many people think that this progress is now unstoppable and we just have to accept that all the damage caused to the environment is a collateral damage for all the conforts of modern life. In fact, all governments and big companies are aware of these problems, but economic interests are sometimes stronger than environmental ones. 0-
