Everyone was and they were

Hi. Let's say you're writing a very short imaginary story about a family of four. There were a father, a mother and two sons. Could these, including one in parentheses, be correct endings? Thank you in advance for your help.

She cooked a good meal, and in the end everyone was (they were) happy.
