Everyone but me... or Everyone but I...

Is it ever proper to say, "Everyone but me..." rather than "Everyone but I..."? For instance, what if "but me" is an apposition or in parentheses? I thought that in those particular cases "Everyone" is the simple subject by itself and thus "me" is okay. Please help.
