Everyone and no one

Dear teahers,

I wonder what the exact meaning of the underlined 'everyone and no one' is in the setence below.

If the phrase has almost the same meaning as 'everyone', what effect do we get by adding 'no one' to 'everyone'? What's the difference between 'everyone' and 'everyone and no one' in the sentence?

Thank you for your time and kindness.

The story of two women who grew up in the wrong families just came to light last month to the surprise of everyone and no one.

Top answer

Everyone was surprised, but no-one was surprised. It's a paradox. Perhaps it was always obvious but people just didn't want to think about it.
