Evergreen question, he said...

Dear Teachers,

I’ve found a relevant post here but I’m still confused; could you help me, please?
Let’s say there’s a sentence in a book; which version(s) would be most likely there?

1) It’s raining again!, says he
It’s raining again!, he says

2) It’s raining again!, said he.
It’s raining again!, he said.

If we suppose that it’s normal style (meaning not extremely sophisticated/poetic, but not “lazy”, either), which versions would you find appropriate, please?

Thank you! Emotion: smile

It depends on the author. Some authors write dialog completely without the 'he said' parts. The reader has to keep track of who is speaking.

"It's raining again!"
"Oh, no! Not again!"
"Yes. Again!"

Others like the 'he-said' word order; others like the 'said-he' word order. When
