Ever since... he [had] always

Is this sentence correct?: "Ever since he set aside a percentage of his first salary for charity, he always shared his wealth."

I know I can put a "had" inbetween "he" and "always", but I'm wondering if you can do without it.. and what would be the meaning if it's possible?
