Vocabulary

ever even

As a child, Sparky didn't have many friends. It wasn't that people didn't like him; they simply didn't notice him. Outside of school, hardly anyone ever even greeted him.

Q) You see "ever even" in the last sentence.
What does "ever" mean in the context and what can replace it?
Does it simply emphasize more degree of "even?"

Top answer

"ever" and "even" both (separately) add emphasis. "ever" emphasises the infrequency, and "even" emphasises that a greeting is not much to ask, or is the minimum level of notice that would be expected.

Hello, GPY

"even" emphasises that a greeting is not much to ask
I don't know the role of 'ask'; did you mean the following by the above sentence?
'Even' emphasizes that a greeting is not much enough to satisfy his desire.

If something is 'not much to ask', it is a very reasonable request.
