Ever bother

I understand that the placement of some adverbs and adverbials is very much dependent upon emphasis. Could someone tell me whether there is any significant difference between the following sentences?

1. If I sensed that they aren't bothered, I don't think I would ever bother with them.
2. If I sensed that they aren't bothered, I don't think I would bother with them ever.
