Ever

Hi there! I'm wondering if you tell me the difference in meaning between these 2 questions:

a) Did you ever meet Jack at university?

b) Have you ever met Jack at university?

Thanks a lot!!

No difference in intent, probably, but A indicates that there is no longer a chance of meeting Jack there, while B leaves open that possibility.
