Even to the overcoming ...

Hi

The fasting man thinks that by fasting he is improving his health, and

his health is improved in consequence, even to the overcoming of

incurable (so-called) organic disease.

I don't get what the author is trying to say in this highlighted part of the sentence?

Also: Does "so-called" refer to the word "incurable" or to the words "organic disease"?

Newguest I don't get what the author is trying to say I don't either. so-called should come before the item to which it applies, so so-called should apply to organic , but the meaning might easily be ... the overcoming of so-called incurable organic disease , though the writer put so-called in the wrong place for that meaning.

Hi

I thought that "even to" is some idiomatic construction which I haven't seen/heard before.

Because of course I understand what "to overcome a disease" means.

Maybe there's some typo there???

No, no typo.

The fasting man thinks that by fasting he is improving his health, and his health is improved in consequence, even to [= as far as to] the overcoming of incurable (so-called) organic disease.

My paraphrase is not very good, but 'even to' means 'to the extremity of': the man thinks that his health is improved and that even his incurable diseases are cured.
