Even so

This is from "Advanced Grammar in Use" by Martin Hewings:

"Even so is a prepositional phrase used to introduce a fact that is surprising in the light of what was just said. It connects ideas between sentences:

Much of the power of the trade unions has been lost. Even so, their political influence should not be underestimated."

Why does the author classify "even so" as a prepositional phrase? Is it that it can be on par with "in spite of that"?

Anonymous Why does the author classify "even so" as a prepositional phrase? Isn't there anything in his book that explains this oddity? He is a Cambridge academic, and they take a somewhat different view of grammar from the majority of text books on the subject of English grammar, so that may have something to do with it.

  • The Cambridge approach values and therefore emphasizes linguistic theory over practical exercises in many respects, so it is not (so far) making major inroads into the more traditional approaches to grammar used in teaching English as a second language.
  • I know of no commonly-used dictionary that lists 'preposition' as one of the parts of speech that 'even' can be.
