Even shades

Blok’s new realm of pain and lust and pleas that went unheard was filled with female figures—no longer even shades of the Beautiful Lady of his early years, but women, “their breasts adorned with a crumpled rose . . . with their heads tilted hack, their lips half- parted.”

Could you please tell what even in even shades means?

Top answer

Apparently, in the early years of Blok's life, he had an ideal female in mind, the Beautiful Lady. Some of the women he met conformed to that ideal to some extent; they were shades of the Beautiful Lady, "shades" meaning wraiths, insubstantial copies. Now he knew only women who did not measure up so far as that in comparison to the Beautiful Lady; they were not even shades of Her.
