Even more vs ever more.

Are there any ground rules for use of 'even more' and 'ever more' ?
What are the grammatical differences, if any?

Eg :
"John was even more determined to learn English." and
"John was ever more determined to learn English."

Is the difference merely contextual?
Please clarify.

I posted this query because I came across a question in an online English proficiency(written) test which had the above quoted example statement's as the two choices among which the correct one had to be selected.
I believe the correct answer is 'ever more', am I right?
