"Even in the middle of the sentence.

Hello everybody,
I've got the following problem. At our university we were discussing the following sentence: Reaching this state is far more difficult than it might be imagined. The problematic word is the word "far" as many of students chose the word "even" instead but it turned out that "even" cannot be used in this sentence instead of "far". I've searched and searched but I couldn't find the answer why it cannot be used here. Could you please help me?
Thanks in advance,
Max

That's nonsense. Either far or even can be used.

I would gloss far as much; even as still.

It's [far / much] more difficult than ...
It's [even / still] more difficult than ...
