Does the highlighted sentence imply "Although representing some of the bleakest moments in the German history, this painting also pays homage to the history and culture of germany, for example its bright and possibly optimistic background reminds of Albrecht Altdorfer’s painting The Battle of Alexander at Issus"?
Context:
In 1934, and coinciding with the rise of Nazi militarism, Dix began his crucial Flanders (1934–1936).16 In a panoramic view of no man’s land, only small, glittering patches of water and the occasional shattered tree enliven the relentless brown of the beaten-up ground. The soldiers are almost at one with the mud in which they sit. The artist wanted them to remain somewhat visible to reinforce the message that war is traumatic. On the stump behind the central soldier, a small twig suggests Christ’s crown of thorns at his Crucifixion. The painting owes much to Henri Barbusse’s famous anti-war novel, Le Feu (1916), in its rejection of any heroic portrayal that might justify the war. At the same time it pays homage to German history and culture, even in its bleakest moments, as its bright and possibly optimistic background echoes that of Albrecht Altdorfer’s The Battle of Alexander at Issus (1529), discussed in Chapter 1.
