Please help me understand the following sentence, please!

" As a Victorian specialist, Matthew was at pains to make the point that biography was not solely the result of 19th centry evangelicalism, with its self-conscious labouring of life and death choices that were personal, immediate and unworldly."

It's an excerpt from a passage talking about the impacts that biography had on western culture.

It is tricky becasue the topic is really abstract given the fact that it is something related to religon.

In order to understand it accurately, it seems that you have to accurately understand the relative religious idea first, which is rather difficult.
