HiDr. Árpád Pusztai ... was a researcher evaluating how to test for the safety of GMOs under a UK governmentgrant. To me it sounds like his job was to find a way to prove that GMO is safe? So he wasn't doing his research to check whether GMO is safe or not, but he was rather trying to prove it's safe and there are no dangers related to using it?

I don't get that from this passage. Here's how I understand it:

Nobody knows yet how to test GMOs to find out whether they are safe or not. Dr. P. is going to do research to find out how to do this. In the course of his research he may try to find tests that already exist and evaluate them for their effectiveness for determining the safety or danger of GMOs, and/or he may specify criteria he thinks are important for such tests, and/or he may even invent a test of his own. The text does not specify exactly what Dr. P. is going to do.

Judging strictly only by what you have shown, I don't believe we can conclude that Dr. P. is complicit in a plan to prove that all GMOs are safe, which is how you seem to be interpreting the passage.
