Evaluate and Assess

Hi

Evaluate and Assess - two words which i happen to see in use at same time in certain documents.
Dictionary gives alike definitions for both: Calculate or estimate the price. There is a reason why two words are different. Which is that?
Thanks

We often remark on these redundancies in documents. In many cases there's no difference. Perhaps in some cases "evaluate" may mean to judge the thing on its own merits, while "assess" may ask you to judge the effect the thing may have on a situation.

The words are used in phrases like "evaluate/assess risk, data or consequences". Not sure of the order, but at first it is recommended to evalute something and later to assess it or vice versa. Somebody out there must be proficient in evaluating abstract things like risk...
