Euro-American

The following description is about this artwork by Jeff Koons. Does "Euro-American" here mean "Europeans and Americans i.e. western people" or "Americans of European ancestry"? If the latter, is it saying that the black couple are behaving in a civilised way, that is, in the way of noble Americans, that is, Americans of European ancestry and not Americans of African or Asian ancestry"?

Text:

Finally, as part of its evocation of middle-class gratification, the advertisement also seems to deliver an imperialist or neo-colonialist message – ‘the civilised way’ may be interpreted as implying doing things the Euro-American way.

Top answer

"Euro-American" is based on the PC term "African-American", formerly "Afro-American", for the American blacks. It means Americans of European ancestry—white people, basically. Koons is lampooning the ads that place blacks in white-man settings, saying that those ads imply that the blacks need civilizing, need bringing along into the superior white way of living and furthermore that such ads make the whites feel good about themselves.
