Etymology of holocaust

On the first page of a high school history book (Globe Fearon's HISTORICAL CASE STUDIES: THE HOLOCAUST), I find this:

In the late 1950s, the word "holocaust" became a part of the English language. Holocaust comes from a Greek word that means "a sacrifice by burning" or "total burning." The word was added to the English language to describe the systematic murder of six million Jews by Nazi Germany in World War II.

I know that Holocaust history is required to be slightly biased. But this is outright deception! A quick look in the dictionary confirms that the word was never "added" to English from Greek, and that it did not originate in the 50s after World War II. The liberal media has gone out of control on this one! (Remember this book is targeted at young impressionable high school students!)

Educated people in English-speaking lands knew and used it since the middle ages, when describing sacrificial practice. That date is ridiculous.

That's not what your quote says. All your quote says is that it came from a Greek word.

It is discouraging to see this in a textbook. . . .

Holocaust was used in English for centuries because it has a distinct function. Religious

"Holocaust' did not become part of the English language in the 1950's. It had already been an English word for a long time. Moreover, it was scarcely an obscure word, and, even if it were, requiring a word to be 'wide

I believe the quoted author meant "mainstream English language".

True, the word existed since the middle ages, but I don't think it was a
