Ethics - singular or plural?

Is ethics singular or plural? Can we say: his ethics was lost. (or something similar). Or, must we necessarily say: his ethics were lost.

Ran across a post titled "Where does ethics come from?" And it just seemed wrong to me. I would've written "Where do ethics come from?" Am I correct?
