My general understanding of this phrase is that it's like "etc." for people.
My question is if it's only for specific people.
For example: "Jim Stevens, et al."
Or could it instead be for a list of general unnamed persons: "… bakers, shop owners, peddlers of knickknakcs, et al."
I have a feeling it's only the former.
