Establishing an numerical amount

I'm writing prizing for a contest in prose with a strict character count.

I'd like to say "each of three winners will receive...," leaving out the article "the."

Is the article necessary here if I'm establishing that there will be three winners and each of them will receive a prize?

Any links to an established formatting body addressing this issue would also be helpful.

Thank you!

anonymous Is the article necessary here if I'm establishing that there will be three winners and each of them will receive a prize? The form without an article is the usual one in this context. There is no ambiguity.
