Establish your own needs

Hi

Could you please shed some light on the use of "establish your own needs" in this sentence? Is it natural to native ears?

A boy to his friends about her difficult parents...

I know that they are difficult parents, but did you ever try to establish your own needs to them?

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks for the detailed answer, enoon.

Simply speaking, the sentence is NOT natural. Right?

I think it is unidiomatic ( I think "establish" wants "with" instead of "to"), and I find it rather meaningless. Still, I wouldn't be surprised to hear it from a certain kind of native speaker.
