Essential to verb(infinitive) / verbing (Gerund)

How to use to(preposition) + verbing (Gerund) - It seems a unconquerable challenge to me. I have worked hand on it, but could not able to get though it. I have found following two examples in two different websites. Could someone please help me elucidating this problem?

1. It is essential to keep the two groups separate. (http://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/essential_1)

2. A stronger engagement of the private sector will be essential to attaining any development goals. (http://www.thedailystar.net/editorial/billion-dollar-opportunity-1334050)

Thanks
