essential to / for some to do something

Hi everybody,

Below is one of those highly controversial questions excerped from KPDS examination administered by OSYM in Turkey a couple of weeks ago.

I would kindly request you to make the 23rd question clear to me as to my mind,both "for" and "to" are two possible options. I just don't want to take up much space here giving copy-pasted examples in favour of "to".Though "for" is the one I went for, "to" is not that much far beyond reasonable.What do you think? (doesn't the question deserve to be called mutually exclusive?)

Intellectualization is an attempt to gain detachment from a stressful situation by confronting it in abstract, intellectual terms.
