Grammar

essential

Hello,

I am having some trouble with the use of the word 'essential' in the sense of "be indispensable for the sake of achieving sth," as in:

"Money is not essential to happiness"
"Food is essential for life"

Are the following examples acceptable (if awkward):

"A car is not essential to/for your arriving on time."
"Human volition is not essential to/for the end of History coming to fruition." ?

Thank you.

Top answer

Yes, awkward. A car is not essential to/for your timely arrival. Human volition is not essential to/for the fruition of history.
