Recent years have observed a fall in the population of flora and fauna across the globe. It seems the root causes of this lie in human impact, and there can also be adverse ecological consequences. There are, however, potential remedies which will be discussed in this essay.

Obviously, human activity has led to environmental deterioration. That human population has exploded in the last decades means an unceasing search for more arable land to deal with their necessities, such as food production, timber, energy, livestock grazing, and construction. Deforestation of the tropics whose dense vegetation is the natural habitat of a large number of certain species is a prime example of what has been done to meet such requirements.

The corollary of the decline is the knock-on effects on ecology. It is in fact the vulnerability to predation that gets aggravated when certain large predatory beings become rare, thus the extinction of small mammals whose predators used to be hunted by larger animals. Added to this the disruption to vital ecological processes such as pollination and seed dispersal; leading to cascading losses, ecosystem collapse, and a higher extinction overall.

Turning to feasible solutions, probably the most effective would be to raise awareness regarding the serious repercussions of the issue. Imposing stringent laws also may well deter poachers from over-hunting the animals. Another viable option could be to monitor the population of animals and introduce conservation programs if one certain species is critically endangered.
