Congratulations to Rawlings' for writing an article that achieved high attention and response. He "struck a chord", but unfortunately, his column has a poorly thought out title, a convoluted message, and a partially flawed argument. If he had written this article well, it may not have gotten the same response. Good for him for leaving the holes necessary to push peoples’ buttons. I agree that a true college education is undervalued by the general public in our country. I agree that being college educated makes a huge difference in what someone can accomplish in their career and life as a whole. However, the majority of college students lack the proper perspective while going to college which diminishes the return on their, or their parents’, investment. Most college students waste their college years and just essentially have a giant 4 year party that ends in a brutal realization that they’ve done nothing to differentiate themselves from the hundreds of thousands of other college graduates each year. It is true that most college graduates get a degree, but not an education and will spend the rest of their life with the perception that their college degree was a lost investment… a sunk cost that they’ll never recoup. All that being said, it is simply ignorant to write an article on this subject that does not acknowledge the shockingly high and offensive cost of a college education that continues to rise every year. The average cost of a college education in our country is a very clear deterrent to prospective college students and their parents who question the decision to accumulate $100-200K in dept by the age of 22. Regardless of the value of an education, this is a massive concern which is perfectly justifiable.
