Question, It is important for children to learn the difference between right and wrong at an early age. Punishment is necessary to help them learn this distinction. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? What sort of punishment should parents and teachers be allowed to use to teach good behaviour to children?
It is argued that children have to be punished at their early age to distinguish between right and wrong. This essay disagrees with the statement because punishment may harm children physically and mentally and there are other positive ways for adults to descipline them.
Punishment often damages young bodies and their emotion. When desciplne is performed as a physical nature, injuries are often accompanished. Some scars could simply remain on one's body or serious damage such as brain injury could happen when it becomes more harsh. Moreover, when a child is under punishment, their emotional connection with parents or teachers tend to be broken because he or she feels not to be loved. This feeling hurted could result in permanant mental problems such as depression or ADHD for a child.
Moreover, there are other beneficial methods to teach children what is wrong and right. For example, teachers or parents can be good role models. Basically, children have a tendency to follow adults' behaviour and if they only see right one it will prevent them to act badly. Furthermore, rewards can be given for good behaviour which may read to discourage bad one.
Even though punishment does not benefit children, if it is necessary, it should not be a physical form. Time-out or writing a letter of apology are suggested as those let children have time to examine their behaviour. As well as that, some small chores could be given such as picking up rubbish or cleaning their rooms as punishment.
In conclusion, I am against punishment because it is harmful for children physically and mentally. Neverthless, if it is really needed the nature of punishment should not be physical. Other types of punishment which let them look back their behaviour are recommended.
