Marriages are bigger and more expensive nowadays than in the past. Why is this the case? Is it a positive or negative development?

People incur enormous amounts on wedding ceremonies of their children. It is argued that many marriages have become expensive and bigger if we compare them with the past. Growing families and social contacts of people are the two primary causes of this phenomenon. However, this trend will have adverse ramifications.

Increasing number of friends and growth in families are the basic causes of expensive marriages. Availability of inexpensive internet and technological devices, such as laptops, smart phones and tablets have resulted in large number of friends. People are now connected not only with their relatives, but also make new friends, which was not possible earlier. As a result, they involve these people in their personal occasions and do not consider the expenses. For example, average guests in each wedding ceremony of India were 500 in 2018 as compared to 200 in 2010. The reason was the expanding relations with friends and other relatives.

However, this trend will have adverse consequences as people may go through inferiority feeling. That is to say that people may feel inferior if a number of guests are fewer in their event. In other words, people will try to invite too many guests in their event so that others can note the hefty presence. Therefore, many will follow this trend and invite everyone in their weddings regardless of surge in expenses. In Japan, for example, if someone invites lower than 50 guests in their functions, it is considered negative and portrays a bad image.

In conclusion, the primary reason of expensive marriages is growing families and expanding social network. And this development is not good because people are going through the complexity of inviting many guests regardless of high expenses.
